Unit 7: 03 – Production Plan

Changing models of media distribution & Streaming media and changing patterns of consumptions.

1.     Project Logbook:

We are employed by noBIGego who specialises in the creative media production in Print, web and screen-based media. The company has numerous clients who wish to develop digital content distribution strategy. We’ve been tasked to create their first documentary on Social media and how it’s impacts. However, to complete this I need to gain knowledge in media distribution methods and when consumers will be most likely to interact with a post and how to target a post properly to a certain age demographic.

They’ve asked for a notebook and logs to be kept along the way to help show progress and how the project is being developed as well as research and sources being provided. The logbook kept should include:

  • Creative intentions on the project and how they evolve over time
  • A project schedule and working methodology
  • A report of what you did, when and thoughts throughout the project (At the end of each sprint cycle)
  • A report of where things went wrong and how I overcame them as well as any unexpected results (at the end of each sprint cycle)

2.     Investigate and plan:

Conduct research into media distribution and how the different mediums of distribution change and evolves and how it has changed in the past as well as looking into streaming media and patterns of media consumption as well as looking into future trends.

3.     Design and Create:

Develop a media distribution content strategy for video content considers the changing media distribution and the topic of streaming media and changing patterns of consumption, is appropriate to the audience of choice (Ag, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Socio-economic status, Demographic, Psychographics, etc)

Provide Evidence of development and consider the aesthetic/visual strategy within the digital content that captures the ethos of the client and will appear in the market. Finally identify and justify the digital content systems that could be used for your client.

4.     Presentation:

Present your live clients a “Video distribution content strategy” in a 15-minute verbal presentation

5.     Performance Review:

Complete a performance review that addresses the success of the project and its effectiveness in addressing the issue identified in the theme of Changing models of media distribution and the topic of Streaming media and changing platforms of consumption. This template is available on Moodle

Individual Project – Kevin Ward

We must film and shoot a 5-10 minute film or documentary for our employer NoBigEgo

Idea 1:

A short 10 minute documentary on Social media’s negative impacts on today’s society as an addiction and its design philosophy on how it’s designed to tap into the addictive and easily distracted nature of people especially in today’s world. A look into a week without social media as an experiment and how social media links to mental health with people posting their “perfect” lives, leaving others comparing and expecting the same. Look into depression with social media and how to manage better with addiction.

Idea 2:

A look into data privacy with companies such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, being huge data and ad companies who collect data on us to serve us advertisements as well as selling this data to other companies, violating our data privacy. Also a look into how companies are back peddling now, offering more “privacy” settings to appease people complaining while knowing the masses won’t care or understand. I want to look into the Cambridge analytic scandal and explain the more personal and data protection aspect of that as well as how your data can be harvested and used against you and the dangers of having everything online. I want to do an experiment on living without any access to servers from these big companies and in a privacy, offline way to see how communication, work, etc. is affected to an offline or more private route (Using tor, a VPN, Open source apps)

Chosen Idea:

The Idea me and NoBigEgo agreed on was Idea 2 as it has more potential on reaching a bigger audience but Idea 1 can have a small mention with us exploring it in the future but Idea 2 tackles a hugely popular topic at the moment with data privacy being everywhere on the news and with companies changing their privacy policies and more with Facebook & Google trying to gain back consumers trust.

Idea Changes During Lockdown:

Lockdown Troubles.

Lockdown has changed all our lives drastically. Before, my plan was to create a documentary on Social media and the negative impacts it’s having on our society, whether that be distancing us from people in the same room as us or collecting vast amounts of data on us. I’ve wanted to change this due to the pandemic and social media now providing us a way to keep in touch with people we can’t see anymore due to rules and regulations keeping us indoors except for extreme cases. Although the privacy issues still stand especially with Zoom, being in the news a lot recently due to its mass popularity with people using it for video calls with their friends, teachers and students using it for classes and other mass meetings taking place, it’s has it’s own issues crop up. Especially now companies such as Netflix and Facebook can better market to us more due to us spending a considerable amount of time more on these platforms. Due to the restrictions, I’m unable to do live interviews with students and people in my local city which I believe impacts the plans I had in place so I wanted to switch my topic to something I can achieve and work on indoors while in the safety of my house,

Idea one:

For my first idea I wanted to look at Media preservation and the “All Digital” future we’re headed for with classical forms of digital Media being phased out such as disks and cartridges and moving to being primarily downloaded. I want to look at how this has affected the various industries so far such as the music, film and games industries respectively. I also want to investigate the benefits as well as downfalls that an “All Digital” future would bring and how the hard core in the communities look at these as well as the rise of collecting and Limited Run prints. In the end I would want to see if there’s a middle ground were both physical and digital media both have a place In the future and look at how this can potentially happen.

Idea two:

For idea two, I would like to look at community content based platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and more to see how these allow their respective communities to gather and create content which is free from any large media entity and which allows more creativity for the users thanks to the content being created by and for them as well as how they steer the direction of these platforms. I also want to look at how entertainers and creators are able to make a living from them as well as base their lives and work independently and be self-employed.

Idea three:

My Final idea would be to create a short documentary on a favorite pastime of mine, game emulation. I’d like to look on the history of the subject as well as the various ways it’s changed the gaming industry and the various legal histories and troubles it’s run into but also how it’s helped advance preservation of videogames as well as their legacies. I would investigate the various massive changes throughout the years and how companies who once fought against game emulation are now embracing it. I would look into the various improvement’s emulation can have to games such as resolution increases, performance increases, community made content and fixes as well as the demand it shows for gamers wanting to be able to play games from their past. Also looking into the various devices now which allow people to emulate as well as the legal and ethical issues behind it.

Final Verdict:

In the end I’ve chosen to tackle idea three as I think it would be a super fun and interesting subject to tackle and maybe bring it to more people’s attention along with being able to take my practicing of Product photography to a video format. I would love to tackle the various technical and historical areas of this subject as I feel like preservation In emulation is an extremely important subject with a lot of companies abandoning their past games as well as games not being portable files and being a lot more complex in terms of formats and installations than movies.
